She writes, edits and creates the Art Department News Letter and serves on the Academic Senate.Latest project to keep us at the cutting edge: Currently converting art history images from slides to computer.  Soon one machine will do what VCR, overhead projector and slide projector did before.

She writes:These Ruins Are Inhabited.
Roman ruins at the site of Jerash, the city in Jordan where I did  research for my dissertation in 1994.  I studied the fine art of architectural recycling. It was fascinating to see how the towns people reused ancient remains such as the stone capital shown above. No coffee table this, however.
These Ruins  Make a House a Home.
My first abstract painting, now a talisman, is a flaking ruin that has moved around the world with me. Painted over a second-hand canvas abandoned by a former art student, this picture brings me luck.  It has moved with me from America to Africa to Europe and back again.

I joined the Art Department in 1972, and taught only Art History for about 15 years. In the 1980s I became a desktop design devotee and helped start the art/architecture/engineering computer-graphics lab on campus. I have published several books and numerous articles on desktop publishing. In late 1999 I started learning about web site design; currently, I'm redesigning this site. I am a dedicated student of both flamenco and middle eastern dancing. In addition, I am studying to become a certified Tarot reader. (To visit my website, go to: katagories.com ) The photo at right shows me dancing for friends at a party. My husband, a composer and Flamenco guitar student, accompanies me.

Carson Scott Leaves Us A Valuable Legacy

Raised on a farm in Oklahoma, Carson Scott's first experiences with management came when he operated the farm in his parents' absence.  He studied at the University of Oklahoma and received his Master of Fine Arts from CSU Long Beach.   Carson traveled widely, but was particularly fascinated by Egypt, to which he returned again and again.  His openness to change and innovation helped to fuel the Art Department's renascence.

On Carson's watch, the art department has greatly expanded its faculty and programs.  From a department of two full-timers we have increased to a total of six.  Our programs have expanded to suit the needs of the times. Computer graphics courses were added in the early nineties, followed by a program of campus beautification.  In 1997, the Animation Program geared up, and in 1999, the process of digitizing Art History images began.

The Art Department faculty misses Carson tremendously, and we THANK HIM for all his efforts.
